Bridges
A bridge is a false tooth which is secured to a tooth/teeth either side of the gap. It can be secured via metal ‘wings’ which are bonded onto the back of the supporting teeth, this is called a Maryland bridge.
A traditional bridge uses the teeth either side of the gap to have crowns fitted to secure the false tooth. A cantilever bridge is used when there is only one natural tooth to secure the false teeth onto.
Bridges are a good choice if you prefer a fixed option and your palate left clear, however they are prone to damage due to reduced bone support underneath the bridge. The Maryland bridge may also debond if too much pressure is applied when eating.
Bridges are available on NHS Band 3 treatment plans.
