A Guide to
Braces
Fixed Metal Braces
Fixed metal braces are the standard pair of braces you see that are used by many school children and teenagers, commonly known as “train tracks”. The braces are small designed metal plates called brackets, which are bonded to each tooth. In some cases metal rings called bands are fitted at the very back of the mouth. The brackets will then be attached to a thin metal wire, which is known as an archwire. The wire is held in place by elastomerics or thin wires called ligatures. These elastomerics now come in a range of colours to help brighten your smile during treatment. The braces are adjusted periodically at regular intervals to achieve the best results possible, straighten teeth and correct the bite.
Invisalign Braces
Invisalign braces are a set of discreet removable braces. Treatment consists of a series of removable aligners that are changed every two weeks. Each aligner is individually manufactured in a lab to fit your teeth. As the weeks go by and you switch to each aligner you will notice your teeth start to straighten until they have reached the prescribed position given by the orthodontist. A virtual 3D treatment plan can be produced to give you a virtual projection of how your teeth will move and look at the end of treatment, allowing you to gauge the effectiveness of the treatment. Invisalign braces are the premium aligners for comfort allowing you to carry on with your everyday life.
Radiance Braces
Radiance braces are designed for patients who want a nearly invisible set of cosmetic braces. With their polished sapphire brackets, Radiance braces will compliment your smile and blend in. Each Radiance bracket is made from a sapphire crystal, which is developed and polished to make it exceptionally smooth to touch. Clear Sapphire crystals are very strong meaning Radiance braces are one of the strongest ceramic braces available. Our Orthodontic specialists at Harborough Orthodontics are skilled and experienced in the fitting of this brace, as well as the adjusting and removal of Radiance Cosmetic Braces.
Iconix Braces
Iconix Aesthetic braces are stainless steel, champagne-coloured brackets which offer the durability of stainless steel, whilst remaining effective and aesthetically pleasing. Iconix brackets are manufactured with a smooth zirconia finish to ensure no discoloration occurs throughout the duration of treatment. They are an alternative to Radiance Cosmetic braces and are suitable for both adults and children.

Our
Consultation Process
1. Your first visit - New Patient Examination
At this appointment, after checking your medical history, the orthodontist will perform a thorough orthodontic examination, where one of the following outcomes will be decided:
- You are ready for treatment
- No treatment is indicated
- Treatment will be needed, but not yet
If orthodontic treatment is required, the orthodontist will take full records, which will produce a specific treatment plan for you. These records consist of clinical photographs, impressions of the teeth, and radiographs (xrays). If it is decided that treatment is not needed yet (due to age or the teeth not being fully erupted), you will be placed on a recall list for a future appointment.
Typical appointment time – 15 to 30 minutes.
2. Second Consultation Appointment
At this appointment, we will discuss your desires and expectations for your teeth, to allow us to present our recommendations for your orthodontic (braces) care. We want to make this visit as informative and productive as possible in order to answer all of your questions, such as:
- What kind of orthodontic problem do I have?
- What can be done to correct the problem?
- What sort of brace will I have to wear?
- How often will I need to attend for adjustment to my brace?
- What will be the approximate length of treatment?
- If applicable, what type of financial arrangements can be made?
- When do we start?
Typical appointment time – 15 to 30 minutes.
3. Appliance Appointments
These appointments follow the initial visits. The appointment duration will vary depending on what procedures are due be performed, but can range from 15 minutes to 1 hour. Once the braces are fitted, the time between appointments is usually six to eight weeks. Our patients can also select the colours of the ties on their braces at each appointment.
Active treatment with braces usually takes approximately 18 months.
4. Retention Appointments
After having your braces removed, the teeth may want to become misaligned again, therefore you will be fitted with retainers to prevent this from happening. Wearing your retainers is important, therefore instructions will be given regarding care, time of wear, and future appointments. Regular check-ups are required to ensure that the orthodontic correction remains stable. A short appointment will be scheduled at three or six month intervals as required.
5. Recall Appointment
Should you not require treatment at the time of your first visit, your name will be placed on a “recall” list and we will invite you back for an additional appointment approximately six, nine or 12 months later. This will allow the orthodontist to monitor your growth progress so that treatment can be started at the most appropriate time.
