If you are considering getting Invisalign, it helps to know what to expect first.
- Consultation:
Before you can receive your aligner, you must first speak to your Orthodontist. During this appointment, your teeth will be critically examined to determine if Invisalign is the best treatment option for your dental and oral health. In some cases of extreme malalignment, you may be recommended an alternative option instead.
- X-rays:
Your Orthodontist will also acquire x-rays of your teeth to evaluate your suitability, the health of your teeth and their position in your face. These radiographs will help them get the whole picture of your mouth.
- Impression taking:
Your Orthodontist will take an impression of your oral structures and then create a digital 3D model out of it. This model will be a direct replica of your mouth and will allow the fabrication of clear aligners that perfectly compliment you and give great outcomes.
- Fabrication and seating:
The data of your oral structures will then be transferred to the fabrication plant which delivers the finished product to your Orthodontist. These custom-made Invisalign aligners will ensure a flawless fit to effectively help your teeth move into alignment.
- Follow-up:
After receiving your Invisalign clear aligners, you should schedule follow-up appointments with your Orthodontist. These appointments will help them check the progress of your treatment. Every seven to ten days, your Invisalign aligners will be swapped. If worn properly, Invisalign treatments have shown to correct malalignment as early as ten weeks.
How often should Invisalign be worn?
It is important to note that Invisalign aligners are to be worn for up to 22 hours a day. You are permitted to remove your aligners for two hours every day which means that you will have to strategically fit your removals during eating and brushing in this two-hour timeframe. It also means that you will have to wear them when you go to sleep. Consistency in wear can significantly influence your treatment length.
What to expect with Invisalign?
Receiving your Invisalign aligners is only the first step. Maintaining and wearing them regularly is when your treatment process truly begins. Won’t my child’s teeth straighten out as they grow?
One of the most infamous and on-going misconceptions among parents is that their child’s oral hygiene does not matter. The logic behind such thought is that since milk teeth eventually fall out, they aren’t as important to be taken care of. However, this could not be further from the truth.
Primary or baby teeth, while being temporary, are also space-holders for the adult teeth. The space available for the permanent teeth does not increase as one grows. A poorly aligned set of baby teeth can also mean drastic impairment in the alignment of the permanent dentition. So, unfortunately, no- your child’s teeth will not straighten out as they grow. The good news, however, is that with the right orthodontic intervention at the right time, your child’s teeth can be straightened.
What is the right age for orthodontic treatment?
There is no set age when children should start to see an orthodontist. Whilst the majority of children are ready for braces by 11-16 a very small proportion could benefit from treatment earlier. This is sometimes referred to as interceptive orthodontics. The treatment plan will depend on the specific child’s unique needs. If you think that a problem is developing earlier then you should seek advice.
The goal of any orthodontic treatment is to prevent further problems from arising and to ensure a “normal” bite. Braces and other aligners are thought to be most effective in children as compared to adults as their bones are still developing. Adjusting the underlying bone and restructuring the positions of the teeth early on in the developmental process can improve their bite for the rest of their lives. Getting orthodontic treatment may be your child’s saving grace from a lifetime of poor oral health as the need for dental work is significantly reduced if orthodontic treatment is completed early.
What can orthodontic treatment fix?
Early intervention of braces and aligners in kids helps correct the developmental problems associated with their teeth and jaws. Your child maybe in need of an orthodontic treatment plan if they present with any of these conditions:
- Overcrowded teeth: When there is a discrepancy between the size of your teeth and jaws. Overcrowded teeth can be unsightly and cause many hygiene problems.
- Uneven gaps: When there is a discrepancy between the size of your teeth and jaws or when there are missing teeth.

If there is a problem with your child’s bite it can sometimes be beneficial to treat them before the age of 11 years. Introducing braces when the child’s bones are still malleable can help expand the jaw to make room for their permanent teeth, thus, correcting the incidence of overcrowded, crooked, or misaligned teeth.
What are some benefits of early orthodontic treatment?
- Creates more space for overcrowded teeth to erupt: Orthodontic treatment can help expand the jaws and make more space for the permanent teeth to erupt in uniformity.
- Improves facial symmetry: Braces and aligners can correct crooked and misaligned teeth. This synergistic tooth movement can change the overall appearance of the face, making it look fuller and more symmetrical.
- Reduces the risk of chipping of protruded teeth: Children who have protruded front teeth often do not have enough lip coverage to protect the teeth from a fall or a blow. Riverdale Healthcare, which incorporates Windmill Orthodontics, have announced that they will be first UK dental group to have the revolutionary Radic8, VirusKiller clean air technology installed.
It is now clear that the entire landscape of dentistry will change at least during the transmission phase of COVID-19, forcing the dental profession as a whole to revisit its entire infection control method and policy, bringing about significant policy changes in the wake of the crisis.
Riverdale Director, Ian Gordon explains, “Dentistry has always had excellent standards of cross infection with single use instruments where possible, autoclaving of other instruments and disinfection of hard surfaces. One of the biggest challenges in infection control within healthcare settings is in dealing with the air and whilst there is no real evidence of transmission in a dental practice via this route it has remained an area of some concern.

The safety of our patients and our teams is of paramount importance to us. In the interests of all, we are following the advice from the Chief Dental Officer and stopping any face to face consultations or treatment. Coronavirus Impact update
25/3/2020
We will now see EMERGENCY PATIENTS ONLY
PLEASE DO NOT ATTEND THE PRACTICE IF YOU HAVE SYMPTOMS OF COVID-19. If you do you will be asked to leave immediately.
Further to the Prime Minister’s statement on Monday evening, the definition of a dental emergency will need to be much more restrictive. It would be unsafe to provide certain treatments unless we are given access to the appropriate equipment.
Postponing routine appointments
All routine appointments have been suspended in keeping with the current policy from our Professional Body (the BDA) and to respect social distancing in line with Government Policy. This is for the safety of both our patients and our colleagues.
If you have a routine appointment booked you can expect to hear from us again shortly to postpone your appointment to a later date.
Please don’t worry, you will not miss out on any dental care that you need in the longer term.
Once we are able to get back to our normal operation we will be extending our opening hours to catch-up on postponed appointments although your treatment needs may require reassessment with a new examination, depending on the delay in resuming limited or normal services.

1. You require emergency treatment
2. You need advice or reassurance
3. You need a treatment completing such as a crown or denture fit – your original appointment will be cancelled – there may be circumstances where this treatment is provided IF we consider it would prevent a problem or the denture is essential for function.

In hours emergencies
Please rest assured that whilst we are operating on reduced staffing levels, we are still available to provide emergency dental care. If you experience a problem, please call the practice and we will aim to see you for treatment on the same day if appropriate.
The treatment we are able to provide is governed by regulatory guidance and may be more limited than usual.
Out of hours emergencies
If you have a dental emergency and are unable to wait until our practice is open, please call NHS 111. This service is overstretched so please do so on an extreme emergency basis only.

Covid 19 is affecting all our lives in a way we could not have contemplated even 2 weeks ago. I have delayed writing to you in relation to any change in arrangements at the Practice simply because things are changing daily and at times hourly.
As of today, Sunday 22 March ALL practices in the Riverdale Healthcare Group, including Alpha and Vitality practices, Archway, Eston, Framwellgate, Pelaw and Hebburn are moving to see patients for Emergency treatment only.
PLEASE DO NOT ATTEND THE PRACTICE IF YOU HAVE OR HAVE SYMPTOMS OF COVID 19. If you do, you will be asked to leave immediately
NHS Commissioners, our regulator and the Chief Dental Officer still only advise a reduction in the number of patients we see and to not provide certain treatments. However our Professional body, the British Dental Association (BDA) backs the position we are adopting.

Corona Virus Update
We live and breathe our passion for delivering high quality, ethical dental care which is why we are looking at ways to reduce areas of potential risk for our colleagues and patients during this difficult time.
We have therefore taken the decision to postpone all routine treatment which involves an aerosol. We will be directly contacting patients who have appointments which are affected by this decision. In addition, if you are a vulnerable person and have an appointment booked, we invite you to use our website contact form or phone the practice to postpone your appointment.
If you require treatment now and are NOT in a “risk group” ( ie not Covid-19 positive, not self isolating, or in a self isolating household) then please contact the practice and we will provide what treatment we can within the scope of treatment we are advised to provide.
