World Oral Health Day is an initiative which aims to help improve oral health across the globe. Poor oral health is linked to pain and suffering but it also impacts the health of your whole body with gum disease being linked to conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, rheumatoid arthritis, metabolic disease, and Alzheimer’s to name a few. Most oral diseases are preventable and this is key to what this annual day is all about – education for better oral health.

The 2024 campaign is  “A HAPPY MOUTH IS… A HAPPY BODY.” The goal is to empower everyone, everywhere to value and take care of their mouths and understand that by doing so, they can also protect their overall well-being. Join the journey to healthier, happier lives.

At Riverdale, we are committed to helping spread the important message of good oral health, with many of our practices across the group delivering “Kids Club” sessions, providing access to young children and educating families on how to take care of their teeth.  With access to NHS practices continuing to prove a challenge for most, a number of our sites are also offering new private patient exams at a reduced cost to help patients access dental care in areas where NHS provision makes this impossible.

Here are my top tips for maintaining good oral health :

  • Brushing Up

Brush twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste – spit it out but don’t rinse it off!

  • Sweet Tooth

Keep sugary snacks to a minimum and if you are having a sweet treat, try to have it at mealtimes.

  • Extra Clean

Use floss or interdental brushes, in addition to your usual brushing, to clean in between your teeth every day.

  • Sugar Rush

Avoid acidic foods and drinks, particularly before bedtime!

  • Checking In

If you are registered with a dental practice, try and see your dentist for check-ups at least once a year.
